In just ten days, nine major Japanese companies and institutions were breached one after another: nearly 10.79 million members of the barbecue restaurant chain "Yakiniku King" had their information leaked, while rental giant Times Car had the information of 6.6 million people stolen along with their driver’s licence photos, potentially allowing others to apply for cards and loans in their names; ransomware paralysed 500 servers at Osaka Metropolitan University, forcing the entire university to suspend classes; Daiwa Securities, Dai-ichi Life and Sagawa Express were not spared either.

From restaurants, finance, media and universities to logistics, attackers used nothing more than commonplace methods such as software vulnerabilities, supply-chain infiltration and phishing emails, yet companies’ defences failed layer after layer. The IT systems Japan takes pride in are collectively breaking down—your name, address, phone number and even your driver’s licence could end up on the black market in the next attack.
