XPRIZE Wildfire honors detection and drone finalists, but awards no grand prizes

Space-based wildfire detection systems and firefighting drones were among the technologies represented by finalists honored in the $11 million XPRIZE Wildfire competition. Neither of its two grand prizes was awarded, though the technologies could help address the mounting costs of worsening wildfire disasters.

The competition’s First Prize track focused on detecting wildfires from space. Teams had to accurately identify all fires across a large area of Australia within 10 minutes.

The Autonomous Response Prize track set a different challenge: independently locate and extinguish a high-risk fire somewhere in rural Alaska, while disregarding decoy fires. Teams had to complete that task within 10 minutes of ignition.

Andrea Santy, program director of XPRIZE Wildfire, emphasized that the goal is to equip firefighters with tools that support their work. She argued that emerging technology could reduce the dangers firefighters face while helping safeguard communities and ecosystems.
